5 Previous Headies Next Rated Award Winners Who never Made it Back To Top LimeLight


Considering the undisputed fact that the acclaimed Nigeria’s biggest and most prestigious music award, The HEADIES! continuously thrives to recognize outstanding and laudable achievements in the Nigerian Music Industry in the past 10 years.

At the HEADIES, there lots of award categories that recognize different works and endeavors of music artistes. One of such awards is the highly competitive is NEXT RATED category.
Today i decided to compile a list of those who have won the Next Rated Award and have failed to make it big in the industry.
1: OverDoze OD-X3M1Born David Adoga in Kaduna State (north side of Nigeria), Overdose or OD as he his fondly called began loving music since the days of ‘Thriller’ by Michael Jackson and ‘Candy girl’ from New Edition.Growing up with 6 siblings, he went through primary and high school in the same town of his birth.
He worked as a radio DJ on local radio stations in the capital city Abuja and Jos.On the 17th of March, 2007, Overdose won the Next Rated Award and he’s yet to have a hit single since then taking totally out of Limelight. he’s as good as long forgotten as an artiste.

2: WandeCoal
wpid-wp-1423256352015(Born 18 October 1985), born as Oluwatobi Wande Ojosipe in Lagos Island, Wande, a.k.a. Captain Mushin [ @kingkun_], like most great musicians started singing in the teenage choir at his church. He got his break in the Nigerian entertainment industry as a dancer. He continued improving on his vocals skills and got signed to Don Jazzy’s Mo’hits records in 2006. He featured on D’banj’s Rundown/Funk you up album on singles such as “Loke”, “tonosibe” and “why me”.  Being signed to Mo’ Hits records he is also a member of the Mo’ Hits allstars and played a major role in the released CV (Curriculum Vitae) album. His first single of the CV album, “Ololufe“, has been described as one of the greatest love songs ever written by a Nigerian.
Wande Coal later released his debut album ‘Mushin to Mo’Hits which was widely received across Nigeria, UK and the USA. On the 15th of March, 2008 at Planet One, Maryland, Lagos, the Next Rated winner was Wande Coal and this time the “brand new car tradition” debuted. After he departs mo’hits record to set up his own record label, “Black Diamond”. After the release of his much anticipated album “Wanted” which has been accepted on an average basis by his fans, he’s yet to make it back to top limelight.

3: Omawunmi taylor-swift-vmas1Born: April 13, 1982 (age 33), Omawumi Megbele, known by her stage name Omawumi, is a Nigerian singer-songwriter and actress of Itsekiri ethnicity, She gained attention as the 2007 runner-up on West African Idols, a reality TV show part of the Idols  franchise. Her sophomore album, The Lasso of Truth, was reported to be a commercial success in Nigeria.
On May 16, 2009, at the Abuja International Conference Centre, the first time the Headies was taken outside Lagos, Omawumi won the Next Rated category and got a brand new car as well. The Vocal power house singer is yet to make it back to Limelight as she has been busy nursing children.


4: Skuki  
Skuki-2Skuki is a Nigerian Afro hip hop duo composed of two brothers: Tumininu Laolu-Oguniyi and Atewologun Laolu-Ogunniyi. They are also known as Vavavoom and Peeshaun.The brothers reunited in 1999 in preparation to start a music career under the name “Skuki“. Their debut single, “Fire” stayed on the Africa Edition of the Channel O Top 10 Chart for four months and was number one for four consecutive weeks. Their singles “Stamina” featuring Mo’Cheddah and “Banger” featuring DJ Zeez brought them awards and prominence. On the 29th of May, 2010, the duo –
Skuki won the Next Rated category with a new car. They are yet to drop a hit single that won them the award ever since then.

5: Sean Tizzle  SeanTizzle_1Morihanfen Oluwaseun Oluwabamidele, better known as Sean Tizzle, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. He was formally signed to Sound Sultan’s record label Naija Ninjas.  Initially he was a rap artiste but he changed after his discovering how good his voice was for singing and the inspiration. According to him he said he hustled his way out like every other upcoming artiste would before he got into the limelight.
He once slept in a gateman’s house just achieve somethings in his music career. He met his present boss D’Tunes in a studio in Ikorodu Lagos as a friend who is the owner of the Record labelhe is currently signed to Difference Entertainment in which brought him to stardom. The 2013 edition of The Headies was on the 26th of October at Oriental Hotel where Sean Tizzle took the Next Rated award alongside his car prize.
He’s been an average Artiste since then, bringing him into this list.
