10-year-old Fatima Abdulrashid is currently in admission at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH), Shika, Zaria, after her stepmother used molten polythene on her body.
“My father forced our grandmother to release us to him,” Fatima said, before going on to explain how her father took her and her little sister to live with his new wife after their mother died. Her father trades mostly in Lagos and since he was always away, it provided the stepmother the opportunity to maltreat them.
“She started by denying us food,” Fatima said. “After that, she would to lock us in a room that is close to the toilet for
days. As if that is not enough, she would burn polythene and hold it over our bodies so it drops.
days. As if that is not enough, she would burn polythene and hold it over our bodies so it drops.
“When our father returned from his trip to Lagos and saw our condition, he started crying and took us to hospital in Gombe for treatment,” the little child continued.
Fatima’s little sister Narjis couldn’t survive the torture and gave up the ghost.
Daily Trust reports that The girls’ grandmother Hajiya Babuwa Mahmud said they spent three months with the stepmother, and that Narjis died within that period, adding that the girls’ plight drew the attention of some human rights activists who intervened and notified her of the situation.
“No human being in his right senses would have treated these little girls the way that woman did. The woman that maltreated these girls is still in Gombe. We are calling on the relevant authorities to ensure that justice is done,” Hajiya Babuwa said.
Daily Trust adds that the Chief Medical Director of ABUTH, Professor Lawal Khalid, confirms that Fatima is responding to treatment, but the stepmother is still walking free.
